Don C Aka Just Don doesn’t know what a real Buck 50 Hat is

don c just don hats buck 50

A colleague recently sent us a GQ Magazine story of Don C aka Just Don Hats. For the gist of the story they spoke of The Buck 50 Hat and it’s origins.
I, Us, We, as well as the City of Chicago have a problem with that. In the interview, he says that original Buck 50 Hats were made by seamstresses from the neighborhoods and they were sold in liquor stores and convenience stores etc. In his words, the Buck 50 Hat is simply a team hat with snakeskin on brim, top button, and strapback. Totally false!

1st- off, A Real Buck 50 Hat has a clock on the front with a winged design. NOT TEAM HATS! We’re not gonna go into the specifics on what a Buck50 is in this post, but if you want to know, checkout the story we previously wrote here.

The true offense and insult that Don C spews out to the world is not only that he doesn’t know what a real Buck50 is, but he don’t acknowledge the True Originator of the Buck 50 Hat. His name was Red (May he R.I.P) and his hats were legendarily sold at Breyers. All the “80s 90s Drug Dealers” he speaks on knows this. So do every Chicago Cat that knows Chicago.

This isn’t a hate post towards Don C. More like an informative one. We respect his comeup in the hats game. We just wish he’ll name his style something else or tell the true story. Don’t get the spotlight and tarnish the true definition of a Buck Fiddy. Because in doing so, you’re spitting on the originators grave.

The story of Buck 50 Hats

buck50 hats from chicago
Buck 50 Hats has made a major comeback since it’s heydey of the 80s & 90s. They way they were originated was by happenstance.

This is the The story of Buck 50 Hats

A Chicago Street Hustler walked into Breyers and told Red that he wanted a custom baseball hat with snakeskin on it. Red was already customizing hats by putting snakeskin on the brim, top button, and turning the snapback into a snakeskin strapback. The hustler told him he wanted some kind of jewels on the hat.
So as Red was going through options he saw the wings on an old Air Force Jacket. That gave him the idea to put wings on the hat. Afterall, it would match the already snakeskin brim and everything else. But then he couldn’t really decide on what Jewelry to add onto the hat. The thoughts of pendants crossed his mind but never came to fruition. And as he walked through Breyers he saw the watches and it itstantly hit him that a shiny watch in the middle of the wings would look Pimpish. – The Buck 50 Hats was born!
Little did he know he started a style that would become a Status Symbol of Hustlers. Cats poured into Breyers to get there paws on one. Sometimes, even waiting weeks as he was so backed up.
We called em Buck50 because that’s how much they cost, $150. That was the determining factor that separated the Big Boys from the small ones. Cuz everyone couldn’t afford em but Hustlers.

But as we expound on The story of Buck 50 Hats a lot of people didn’t know what happened. The fame of Buck50 Hats just quietly went away. Well, 1st off Breyers closed down shop. Then, unfortunately, Red, The creator of Buck 50 Hats died.
So that left a gap of nearly 10 years that the world went without Authentic Buck 50 hats. Of course, Asian people attempted to capitalize off the famed Buck50 but flopped.

But then a Chicago Cat, by the name of Tory (of ChitownBuck50s) knew the inside ropes on how to make them and had the love for Buck50s. He breathe life back into the famed Buck50.
And today, Buck50 hats are legendary and worldwide.

The misconception of Buck 50 hats

buck 50 hat
If you do a search around the internet on the subject “Buck 50 Hats”, you’ll get a narrow view on exactly what it is. In fact, it’s The misconception of Buck 50 hats that inspired me to write this post. Ya see, 1st and foremost the Buck 50 Hat was an underground piece available in Chicago Shops. It had its foundation in the late 80s and early 90. But even to this day, Buck 50s were hard to find.
So with the popularity of Buck 50s you had a lot of cats out here making hats and labeling them Buck 50s. Just because you put Snakeskin on the Brim of a hat DOES NOT make it a Buck 50 Hat. It’s just a hat with snakeskin on it, in which cats all over the world is doing that rather simple process. To take it a step further, even if you put Snakeskin on the Strapback and Top Button, it’s still NOT a Buck 50 Hat. It’s just a hat with Snakeskin on it with an assortment of names from people who make them.
We talk about this in an earlier post on Buck 50s but we felt the need to expound a little more as some cats out here seem to lost their way.

Employee review working at Olive Garden in Chicago, Addison street

Olive Garden Chicago

Unfortunately, at the moment, I’m an Employee of the fallen Olive Garden Restaurant in Chicago, Il on Addison St. Olive Garden is an extremely successful restaurant operation under the Darden umbrella. As all of their restaurants are located in suburbs, right on the ourskirts of Big Cities. This Olive Garden in Chicago is the first to open it’s doors in a Big City. Management occasionally referred to it at a Test. To see if such a Restaurant can thrive in the City. Well, I work at Chicago’s OG, and this is my story:

The Beginning

I had my resume posted on Career Builder and Olive Garden staff emailed stating they were opening up a Brand New Restaurant in Chicago and they wanted me to come in for an interview. I came to restaurant and was interviewed by 4 people in Management. I gave them my skills and was hired and was instructed to come in on a specific date for orientation.
Now at the time I was working Full Time at a Restaurant that was 30 miles from my house. Olive Garden was closer and my now Ex job was kinda far and per the interview I would be paid more so I gave my now Ex employer my two week notice of resignation. I was do to start orientation at Olive Garden

The Orientation

The orientation was good, positive, and energetic. OG hired around 170 employees (That’s a lot!) and had employees that been working for Olive Garden for a long time train us. The trainers did an awesome job training us. There was emphasis on cleaning, sanitation, the importance of cooking a picture perfect dish, and happy-positive greetings to the customers. We were all overlooked by upper management as they were their to assure things went exactly to OG standards. It was constant talk on working with a sense of urgency as OG is a Fast Paced Restaurant. Management created a team like family environment. After 2 weeks of training I was excited for opening day, which was Sept. 29, 2014

The Grand Opening

Opening Day was greeted with great fanfare. Governor Pat Quinn was there, he and our General Manager gave a bright speech, media from an assortments of outlets were there, people drove by honking and waving at us.
When those doors opened people poured in. It was so packed people waited outside for hours just to get a seat. The kitchen and diner room was extremely busy. People were ordering there pastas and salads by the boatloads. We worked at least 10 hours that day. The opening was a success. Employees and customers all happy!

The Weeks after opening

The following days and weeks of The Grand Opening was the same. It was so busy Management constantly asked can we work overtime. The team needs us. Most of us complied to work overtime. Besides, more hours, more money! One week I worked an astonishing 60 hours. Check was fat! I was able to pay bills, rent, and do for more family.

The slowdown

Now, today, at the current moment, as of December 12th, 2014. Business at the thriving Chicago-Based Olive Garden slowed down dramatically after the first 2 months since The Grand Opening. It slowed down so much that we are constantly sent home early. And if we’re not sent home early our days got smaller. Now, I only get 2-3 days a week and on them days I’m working 2-4 hours. An attempt to talk to Management about more days and hours fall on deaf ears. I guess they don’t love us the way they portrayed when we 1st opened. The sense of family has faded. We been here since the start. Saw through the success of the opening. But now we’re expendable. Not really needed anymore

The Phase Out Process

It appears Og is having a phase out process. Once happy employees now have a disenchanted look on their faces. Rumbles and Whispers of “How am I gonna pay this“? is heard throughout the building. Out of the 170 that started. Only about 80 are still around. Some quit because of the pressures of when we first started. Most recently quit due to lack of days/hours. Besides, what adult can survive off a $100 a week paycheck? My little teenage brother working part time is making more than me. They creating scarce schedules like that to discourage their employees to quit. I’ve pitied to management for more hours but to no avail. Olive Garden don’t need us anymore! Is that how corporate thinks? If business slow, don’t give our employees enough days/hours to survive. They’ll find another job!
Furthermore, I’ve quit a solid full time job just to come to this. I wonder if my Ex employee would rehire me? lol,
Maybe, for future employees things will change for the better. But at the moment, Olive Garden in Chicago on Addison Street just not worth working there. Until then, I’m scheduled to work two days this week, 3-4 hours a day. From that I have to pay rent, bills, put food on the table, and take care of my family, Fuck Me! Smh

Is Derrick Rose too fragile for the NBA?

Derrick Rose in pain Once upon a time, Derrick Rose was sorta like our Great White Hope. A reincarnation of Michael Jordan. Chicago looked at Derrick as if he was gonna be the one to take Chicago on another Championship Spree.
True indeed he came into the league as a scorer. Fast on the ball and sharp on the defense. Those qualities gave him his 1st mvp title.
However, Derrick doesn’t possess what Jordan had: Heart and Guts. Mj was known to play through pain. In 1997 Jordan played through an entire game influxed with the flu. Why, because of his competitive nature, committment to his fans, and most importantly, his love for the game.
Over the past few years Derrick Rose has been pummeled with injury after injury. Sometimes it appeared he was quite Ok to play a game only to disappoint the legion of Chicago Fans that adore him. His injuries has left stranded a Chicago Bulls Team that had chances at a title. As the Bulls played through playoff games, Derrick sat on the sidelines looking like a poor and scared dog. His face looked as if it said “Hell no I’m not getting in that”. He has had so many injuries that fans hope he dont run too fast or jump too high because more than likely, he’ll get hurt. History has proven that.

Is Derrick Rose too fragile?

Too be perfectly honest: Yes! He just made his comback in the 2014 season and he’s already hopping and flopping all over the place. A ankle sprain here, a ham injury there. We as fans are getting used to the “O I’m hurt face” he been wearing for quite some time now.
Derrick has no love or heart for the game. He himself said he’s thinking of a long term goals like going to grandsons graduation. That’s not a bad thing but he’s a young 26 year old MVP. Shouldn’t his mind be on taking his team to the finals? Even Stephen A. Smith said he’s devastated by Rose’s words. What is the use of paying Rose all these millions if he can’t play? He’s played 10 games in two years and paid millions! Is Basketball like Football, boxing, or Ufc where you so harmed where you scared to play?

I think it’s time to renegotiate with Derrick Rose. We, as a people in Chicago can’t take no more! What’s next? A broken nail? Out 20 games? Smh

Chief Keef dropped from Interscope Records

Chief Keef droppedChief Keef, the embattled youth from Chicago seems to not be able to shake off his troubles. Through an initial meteoric rise to fame, which resulted in a Record Deal. Since then, Keef has seen a fair share of run-ins with the law. He has caught multiple criminal charges and even been a resident in a Drug Rehab Program. With all the commotion surrounding Keef. Interscope decided to drop him from the label.
In an effort to thwart the decision. Keef moved to California in an attempt to be closer to the label and to get away from the violent streets of Chicago. It didn’t help as the youth continued with the consuming on Sizzurp (A lethal drug thats mixed with promethazine and codeine), constant weed smoking, prescription drugs, and flaunting of guns.
To add insult to injury Keef first official Album “Finally Rich” only sold under 200,000 copies. Even though his Social persona boasted of selling more. Keef didn’t take too kindly of being released from the label as he with into a charade of negative posts by saying: “Fuck the label, now I can do my own thing!”

My personal thought in all this is:Chief Keef being dropped from Interscope wont stop the kids money. He’s still a commodity cuz he been put on now. Interscope lost in this, Not keef! Ex. Migos not signed n they killing the game now n getting money! They gave Keef a multimillion dollar contract and he didnt sell to Major Labor Standards. They lost, he still got the money!
